All right! Capital! This baby sold overnight for a modest 10k which should help my purchasing power in the immediate future.
It's important to note the difference between these one-shot infusions of capital and renewable resources. While I made 10k in doing this simple quest, I can't do it repeatedly. It's a "non-renewable" resource, one that I can't bank on to make me my millions, because I can only collect the reward once. What I need to do is use these infusions of cash to develop renewable resources which I can depend on day after day to make me money.
What it does do, however, is give me the initial capital to start my ventures and build profit streams. It allows me the capital to do this:
Those Flax Flowers cost 2244 gil from the guild (minimum price) and will sell on the AH for 5k or more. Those grass threads will be synthed into grass cloth for skill, and then sold on the AH for small profit, so my effort here is doubly rewarded.
Moonies now sports 2.8 clothcraft skill, from crafting grass cloths.
While waiting for things to sell, I continued to build my fame by doing random quests which turn a profit:
As my fame increases, I will have more access to non-repeatable quests for things like Aspir, Blaze Spikes, Teleport-Mea for larger infusions of cash to further develop my revenue streams.
I camped the guild successfully a few times, and made a few stacks of grass cloth, which I threw up on auction, then logged out.
Time spent (running total): about 4 hours Net worth: about 40k. |
Well, as of December 16th, the experiment is underway! Using a spare slot that I had left over from deleting an unneeded mule, I created a character on foreign world after securing a Worldpass from a friend.

I decided to start my toon as a Windurst national. There are several good reasons for this. First, Windurst has 4 tradeskill guilds in town, which open at 3 different times. This means that I have a lot of good campable guild-sale items, like Saruta Cotton and Bone Chips. These will be a very important early resource. Also, this gives me the option of 4 different tradeskills I can raise without having to travel to get synth support or advance in rank. Second, Windurst has a number of lucrative early quests. I can build my fame by doing the leg-work quests, and actually come out ahead. Third, Windurst is the starting town for a lot of mages, and as such I theorize it should have higher-than-average demand for early spell scrolls. Reselling cheap NPC goods on the AH is a promising low-investment low-risk venture with which I can build capital.
 Say hello to Moonies!
Here's what I started with. I started as a Warrior because they get an Onion Sword. The other starting options give you an Onion Staff, Onion Dagger, White Belt, or a spell scroll. I figured the Onion items would sell because the quest in Selbina, and I figured the Sword would sell the best because it's actually a half-decent cheap weapon to beat up stuff at level one, so it would have that going for it in addition to the quest.
First things first, I turned in my Adventurer's Coupon for 50 gil, taking me up to a "whopping" 60 gil. Just enough, actually, to get started.
I ran to each of the Cloth, Bone, and Cooking guilds and enlisted, and was rewarded with a single crystal at each one. I listed my initial sword and all 3 crystals. Boy, when you don't have much money, Auction fees sure take a big bite out of your wallet:
After all that, I had 25 gil left, so I ran over to the Sarutabaruta regional vendor and picked up a rarab tail for 24 gil.
Hmm, those are pretty good prices. I'll have to remember those, they'll come in handy when I need some quick gil or to cut down costs on leather recipes.
By this time, someone had bitten on one of by single crystal sales. Woohoo, my first profit!
I went and completed the first quest in the S.O.B. storyline using the rarab tail I had purchased earlier, which netted me a Justice Badge. It cost me almost 100 gil to put it on auction, but it should sell for a great price which should really help me kick-start my career.
I also dropped by the Clothcraft guild right at 6AM game-time and picked up the lone Saruta Cotton they stock and a Grass Thread, and auctioned them as well.
After all these, I had a scant 5 gil left. Time to wait for things to sell! Meanwhile Moonies is a tired lil Tarutaru after all that running around

Approximate Net Worth: 15k (gain of 14k) |
You know what? I'm tired of people bitching and moaning about how hard it is to earn money in FFXI. No offense, but it's easy. Dead easy. "Oh sure," people say, "you have 4 veteran crafts; of course it's easy for you! I'm poor, I can't afford anything, I can't make money."
Really, though, it's not. And I'm gonna prove it, and here's how. I'm gonna create a new toon on a new server and see how long it really takes to make money, if you focus at it. Here's the rules of the game: - Start a new toon on a new server - Never hit level 2 on any job - Never accept any gratuity (no /dancing for gil) - Interact as minimally as possible - Make as much money as I can.
How long do will it take for me to hit 100k? How long will it take for me to hit 500k? How long will it take for me to hit 1m? I'm hoping to hit 7 digits in under a month. Let's see! |
